What is a Neapolitan pizza?

The Neapolitan pizza is basically Italian pizza which is also known as a Napoletana and Naples style pizza. 

And, mozzarella di bufala campana, cheese made with the milk from water buffalo raised in Marshlands of Campania state. 

Neapolitan pizzas generally came in small sizes about 10-12 inches. And, it cooked at very high temperatures 800F to 905F for no more than 80-90 seconds. 

History of Neapolitan pizza

Pizza was invented in Naples. Before the 1700s, and after that tomatoes were brought to Europe in the 16th century by explorers returning from Peru. 

Flatbread pizza existed but never topped with tomatoes and Naples began to top their flatbread with tomatoes and cheese in the late 18th century. The dish became popular in those days.

Marinara pizza doesn’t have cheese. It received its name because it was traditionally prepared by seaman’s wife “la marinara” For her husband when he returned from fishing trips in the Bay of Naples. 

In 1889, king Umberto and Queen Margherita of savoy visited Naples and baker raffaele Esposito bake them a pizza named IN honor of the queen whose colors mirrored those of the Italian flag red (tomatoes), white (mozzarella), and green (Basil leaves). This is how Neapolitan pizza became invented. 

The Neapolitan pizza has a denomination of control (DOC) status granted by the Italian standardization body administration by association Vera Pizza Napoletana (AVPN) which was founded in 1984 in Naples. 

They have several requirements that must be certified and restaurants must apply for it officially.

Also, has an American branch and there are currently somewhere around a hundred restaurants in Italy and around the world that are AVPN certified

Variations of Neapolitan Pizza

There are three types of official variety of Neapolitan pizza. 

  1. Pizza Marinara: Topping for authentic pizza marinara are as follows.

  1. Pizza Margherita extra: In this style pizza topped filled with 
  • Tomatoes, 
  • Mozzarella which came from Campania, 
  • Basil
  • Extra virgin olive oil. 

Traditional Toppings

Basically, Neapolitan pizzas are made with fresh natural ingredients.

Topping is fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, Basil leaves, Oregano, and olive oil.

This pizza is thin and it’s not handled too many toppings.

In fact, it’s eaten with a fork and knife.

It is generally baked in a wood-burning oven that’s the heated temperature around 800 Fahrenheit to 900 Fahrenheit.
